The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) is the world’s largest civil society alliance supporting the transition to fair, green economies. Hosted in London by the International Institute of Environment and Development (IIED), the Coalition is seeking a Policy Director to develop the membership’s collaborative policy positions. The Policy Director will also lead one of our flagship programmes, Economics for Nature, on natural capital. This is a new position that provides a unique opportunity to shape, define and lead an ambitious global green economy policy agenda on behalf of civil society networks spanning the globe.
For nearly a decade, the GEC has been on the frontline of global and national debates on green economy research and advocacy. The Coalition brings together over 50 civil society organisations working on environment, poverty and finance reform. It engages closely with international organisations including the OECD, the World Bank and UN agencies but is also rooted in the realities of in-country NGOs and networks that make up the majority of the membership. The GEC is well-funded but growth in influence requires it to invest in more senior leaders who can develop its collaborative policy programmes, continue to fund-raise and manage policy-led projects.
The GEC supports dialogue, exchange and adoption of policy on green economy. The coalition’s core activities are supporting dialogue, developing transition communications & knowledge platforms, and supporting consensus building on effective green economy policy. The GEC is pushing forward on five policy action areas: Measuring and governing, Reforming financial systems, Greening economic sectors, Tackling inequality, and Valuing nature.
About the candidate
Ideally, the candidate will have substantial experience with international policy frameworks, agreements and initiatives addressing green economy. Educated to degree level with a post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline you will have proven leadership, project management and fundraising skills. You will also have a strong background in stakeholder engagement particularly with international organisations, government agencies, academics, NGOs and other civil society organisations. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
So, if you are an experienced professional looking for a senior leadership role combining thought leadership and innovation in policy development with making things happen at the sharp end, and you're as ambitious and optimistic as we are about the future, then we want to hear from you.
