Development dialogues: Electricity beyond the grid
Thurs 22nd February 2018
Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS), one of the Coalition's key dialogue partners in South Africa, is holding the latest in its series of Development Dialogue Seminars this coming February. The seminars are a platform to freely share and discuss views and ideas on development and policy, geared towards analysts and officials involved in the South African policy world.
The upcoming dialogue will discuss "Electricity Beyond the Grid". South Africa’s electricity sector is in the midst of a multifaceted transformation. Renewable energy technologies are aggressively entering the market at both the utility- and small-scale levels; private sector players and prosumers are changing the face of electricity generation; while the national grid is struggling with supply problems and overcapacity.
With the ongoing problems experienced by Eskom, the country’s vertically-integrated national power utility, do the solutions to South Africa’s electricity issues lie elsewhere? Would deeper regional integration represent a sustainable solution to South Africa’s woes? Should municipalities play a larger role in South Africa’s electricity sector? How should users, be it households and firms, position themselves?
This Development Dialogue will share research undertaken on some of these issues and consider the linkages between these different levels of interventions as well as their impacts on the national electricity sector.
Time: 09h30 – 13h00
