9 principles of a green economy? An online consultation

While political momentum on a green economy is now gathering pace there are still some important concerns regarding the meaning and consequences of a transition, particularly for the world's poorest. As governments begin to identify opportunities and policy frameworks at the national level it is critical that their decision-making processes are guided by a common set of goals, an agreed set of principles, for what a green economy must uphold.

With these concerns in mind, Major Groups and stakeholders gathered at the UNEP Governing Council to draft 9 principles of a green economy. The consultation was informed directly by the work of ITUC, ANPED, Stakeholder Forum/Bioregional, the Earth Charter, ICC, the Green Economy Coalition national dialogues, and over thirty other organisations present.

The 9 principles have generated a lot of interest from governments. They have also proved really helpful for defining a common understanding and vision of a green economy among a range of different perspectives.

To build on the momentum and take this process to the next level in time for Rio+20, we are launching an open consultation on these draft principles for your comment and feedback (see multi-lingual versions below). This online consultation will stay open until the end of March, at which point we will gather all of the feedback into a next draft that we will present at the Global Transition Dialogue in New York for the next Rio+20 inter-sessional.
